Police have filed a case against an assistant professor from the Linguistics Department at Lucknow University for allegedly posting offensive content on social media after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, an official said on Monday.

The case against Madri Kakoti was based on a complaint by Jatin, also known as Manmohan Shukla, a first-year MA Hindi student at the university. He is linked to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

In his complaint, Shukla claimed that Kakoti “keeps attacking the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of India” through her posts on X (formerly Twitter). He also said that one of her posts was shared by a Pakistani news channel.

Pahalgam attack news live updates: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday pledged to take “all appropriate steps” to safeguard the country’s rights under the Indus Waters Treaty, which India suspended following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Dar chaired a high-level meeting on the Indus Waters Treaty, attended by Law and Justice and Water Resources Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Awan, senior officials, and technical experts, according to a statement from the Foreign Office. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday said that everyone was waiting to see the Centre's response to the Pahalgam terror attack and added that accountability on the government for potential lapses can be addressed later.

"In my opinion, a response should be given, and there should be a message in that response-- if you commit such acts, you cannot do so free of cost, and that era is over. This is the price to pay – and tomorrow, the price will be greater. “If that message is not given, such incidents will continue to occur,” Tharoor said about the attack that killed 26 innocent people.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 innocent Indians on April 22.

Pakistan has put its military on high alert following India's assertion that it will hunt down the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam strike.

Union Minister Chirag Paswan said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is capable of giving Pakistan a “befitting” response for the terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 innocent people.

“When the country faces such attacks, it is crucial to remain united. The opposition also has an important role to play. The nation must stand together to give a befitting response to those behind the attacks, and our Prime Minister is capable of doing so - but unity is essential from everyone,” Paswan said.

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday slammed former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi for blaming India for the terrorist attack on innocent civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, killing 26 and injuring many.

Citing the alleged delay by the Indian armed forces in reaching the site of attack, Afridi blamed India for making “blunders” and alleged that “India carries out terrorism itself and then blames Pakistan.” Read more

Samajwadi Party Maharashtra Chief Abu Asim Azmi said that nobody should oppose the actions the Centre is taking after the Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of 26 people.

"Every child of every religion is ready to sacrifice their life for the country. The government will decide what action needs to be taken and no one will oppose it. Terrorism should end and there should be no politics over it," the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party Chief said.

Pakistan's defence minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, claimed on Monday that a military incursion by India was imminent in the aftermath of a deadly terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam last week.

Pakistani wives of former Kashmiri militants, who were rehabilitated under a 2010 policy, said they would rather die than be sent back to their home country following India's latest visa restrictions.

These women are staying in the Kashmir Valley after coming to India with their husbands, who quit militancy and joined the mainstream under the then-chief minister Omar Abdullah's policy. Brahmin organisations in Thane have cancelled Lord Parshuram's birth anniversary celebrations scheduled for 30 April to express solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

The decision to cancel festivities was announced jointly by the community leaders.

"Instead of public festivities, we will offer flowers and perform traditional worship (puja) to Lord Parshuram privately on his Jayanti," a statement from community leaders read.

China on Monday said it welcomes all measures to “cool down” the current situation between India and Pakistan, including a “swift and fair investigation” into the Pahalgam terror attack, and expressed support for its all-weather ally in safeguarding its sovereignty and security.

“China welcomes all measures that are conducive to cooling down the current situation and supports an impartial investigation as soon as possible,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a media briefing here.

RJD MP Manoj Jha said that all political parties need to speak in one voice on issues concerning national security and recalled that the Parliament was convened for a session during the Indo-China war.

“Speaking in one voice on the issue of national security is the need of the hour. When there was a war with China in 1962, even then, a session of Parliament was called. The ruling party and the opposition should speak in one voice against those who tried to attack the idea and thought of Hindustan,” said the RJD leader.

Actor Atul Kulkarni said he visited Kashmir as the terrorists who attacked civilians in Pahalgam on April 22 wanted to discourage tourists from visiting the valley. He also encouraged Indians to visit the tourist paradise as an act of defiance against their objective to damage the tourist sector of Kashmir.

“We cannot let them win. This is the first time that they have sent a message or threatened the entire country and the world from Kashmir that you people should not come here. So it is not possible that 6 people will come and threaten 140 crore people. We will not be afraid...I will appeal to everyone to definitely come here,” Kulkarni told ANI.

Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to convene a special session of Parliament to address the challenges to national Unity and citizen security.

“I write to you today as a concerned citizen of India, moved by the gravity of the recent attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The Parliament of India stands as the cornerstone of our Republic and the highest forum for democratic expression. In moments of such profound national pain, it is within the Parliament that the anxieties, hopes, and resolve of the people must find their fullest voice,” Jha wrote.

“It is in this spirit that I respectfully urge you to convene a Special Session of Parliament, dedicated exclusively to an open and principled discussion on the Pahalgam attack and its broader implications for the security, well-being, and aspirations of the people of India. Such a session would send a powerful and reassuring message: that our democracy remains resilient, and that our commitment to every part of our Union, especially those most affected by violence, is unwavering,” Jha added.

Jharkhand, DGP Anurag Gupta said he does not have the exact number of Pakistani nationals who are facing notices to leave after latest visa restrictions.

“I have asked the IG (Special Branch) to get the latest figures from the FRRO of Jharkhand who sits in Kolkata. What information that we have, we have issued notices, they would have left, except for long-term visa. The order of the government is not applicable on long-term visa. Persons having long-term visa can continue, others will have to leave,” Gupta said.

After a controversy over Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah's comments on war with Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack, Congress' General Secretary Jairam Ramesh clarified that statements by ‘some leaders’ do not reflect the views of the party.

“The Congress Working Committee had met on April 24th 2025 and passed a resolution on the brutal terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam two days earlier. Therafter on April 25th 2025 the Congress President and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha attended the all-party meeting and put forward the party's views. Some Congress leaders have been speaking to the media. They speak for themselves and do not reflect the INC's views. There should be absolutely no doubt whatsoever at this most sensitive of times that the CWC resolution, the views expressed by Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and Shri Rahul Gandhi and the views of authorised AICC office-bearers ALONE represent the position of the INC,” Jairam Ramesh wrote on X.
